Welcome
| Welcome to the Democratic Women of the Inland Empire! Serving Democrats in San Bernardino County, Riverside County, and Imperial County Mark your calendar: Meeting June 7, 2008 for next meeting. Primary election is June 3rd. Help get out the Democratic vote. President Sara Garcia welcomed and thanked the the two candidates who came to the meeting May 3rd to discuss their campaigns. Joanne Gilbert is strongly challenging the incumbent in the 43rd Congressional District. The survey conducted in this district revealed that persons want change and they want their concerns to be heard and handled more effectively. Joanne stated that she is committed to respond to them when elected to congress. Pat Meagher is challenging the incumbent in the 41st Congressional District. He spoke candidly about his campaign and how he will organize his office staff to work with the needs of the community and the political elements. Both candidates were hoping for endorsements. There were only five members present. How to contact all members for endorsement process is a concern. Please contact President Sara Garcia with your ideas. NOTE: Prior meetings are reported below for your information. At the March 1st meeting County Supervisor Josie Gonzalez spoke about her three priorities: 1. Transportation, 2. Homelessness, and 3. Healthy Communities. Congresswoman Hilda Solis, Texas phoned and thanked the group for phone banking in behalf of Hillary Clinton. Josie Gonzales presented Sara Garcia with an award for all her work and 2nd Anniversary as DWIE leader. At the February meeting Cheryl Brown, Black Voice News co-publisher, help kick off Black History Month. She gave an outstanding presentation of the History of the Underground Railroad. Volunteer, Nancy Towell played a role as a woman on the auction block. Cheryl asked, "What am I bid for this old woman? She can still work in the kitchen. She can shuck the peas,". Nancy experienced how it really brought it home to her. She felt dehumanized to be treated as an object. For Cheryl history has always been her passion and since 1998 let trips along the Underground Railroad, retracing the steps slaves took in pursuit of freedom from the South into the North and Canada. Nancy Towell took notes at the October 6, 2007 meeting. Assemblyperson, Wilmer Amina Carter was present and commented that in Sacramento politics is the gentle art of compromise. It is nothing like the School Board. It is "hurry up and wait". At this time there were four bills before the Governor. We still have Nancy Pelosi tees to sell. See the information below: We encourage you to be a neighbor informant democrat and participate in Precinct Captains program. Contact Shirley Harlan or Carol Robb for your voter walking list. It is is easy to do on the web now. Please let me know if you have some info that is we can communicate. Thanks Shirley Harlan Don't Let the Republicans Steal the Presidential Election in 2008! No More Dirty Tricks . . . Stop the GOP from Stealing the Presidency! Knowing that their chances don't look good in the next year, the Republicans want to rig the Presidential election, and the nation is looking to California Democrats to stop them. You have probably already heard that a lawyer in a Sacramento firm representing the California Republican Party had quietly filed a ballot initiative hoping to qualify it for the June 2008 primary ballot. If passed, this initiative would single out California and change our state's "winner take all" process to elect our President. Instead of awarding California's 55 electoral votes to the candidate who wins the statewide vote (like every other state, except Maine and Nebraska, which by the way have only nine electoral votes together), California would give each presidential candidate one electoral vote for every Congressional district they win. Of California's 53 congressional districts, 19 are represented by Republicans. The bottom line is that the initiative, if passed, would spot the Republican presidential ticket something in the neighborhood of 20 electoral votes-votes that they wouldn't get under the rules in every other sizable state in the nation, including large Republican states like Texas. Apparently, someone did the math and discovered that the Republicans could steal the Presidency again if you could guarantee 19 electoral votes from California. We need real electoral reform on a national level - not a piecemeal, state-by-state approach that gives the Republicans a clear partisan advantage. This underhanded initiative is the wrong way to reform the Electoral College. Join the California Democratic Party in stopping this outrageous manipulation of California's voting system and to prevent Republicans from stealing another Presidential election. • Tell as many people as you can not to sign the Republican petition and educate them on the facts of the initiative. • Visit www.fairelectionreform.com to learn more It’s never been more important for Democrats to come together to stop this GOP extremism before it spreads to other states!
